Gallery 44 001 - 44 010

The aim is to have a photo of each stage of each loco's life re livery, nose-end, renumbering etc.  PLEASE DO NOT REPRODUCE/SHARE ANY PHOTO's from the site without prior permission. The photo's herein have been supplied with the courtesy of the respective owners.

D1 - 44 001

1959. D1 SCAFELL PIKE outside the Test House at Derby Loco Works, believed to be before entering traffic in 1959.  All Over Lined Brunswick Green Livery with green ends and nose-end discs. Boiler steps and grille unplated. No OHE flashes.

Photographer unknown

1960. No 2 end view of D1 SCAFELL PIKE at Stafford on 14/4/60 hauling 8 30pm Carlisle - Euston. Note the loco is still without OHE flashes, but the boiler water fill point flap has already been removed, as they had a tendency to flip open and get ripped off when passing under bridges.

Photo by the late Ben Brooksbank courtesy David Hills.

1961. D1 SCAFELL PIKE has arrived at Euston on an express from the North West on 10/08/1961. The loco is now sporting an OHE flash on the nose end, probably added late 1960 or early 1961. On the adjacent platform is EE Type 4 D255 with its experimental ETH cable visible.

photo Tony Garner.

1962. D1 SCAFELL PIKE  at Toton MPD on 29/07/1962, now with small yellow panels.

photo Keith Long.

1963. Sporting a Toton shedplate, D1 SCAFELL PIKE  runs light through the old Long Eaton station heading for a weekend layover at home on 02/11/1963.

photo David Wragg.

1971. D1 SCAFELL PIKE stabled at Toton MPD early in 1971, a year which saw the loco in three different guises. Here it is in the first of these, economy unlined green with a small yellow panel on the nose.

photo Chris Vale courtesy of Brian Murphy.

1971. A rare image of D1 SCAFELL PIKE with newly painted full yellow ends and scuffed economy green livery, applied in 1966. The train is a Toton - Whitemoor freight passing New England Yard, north of Peterborough station on 13/02/1971. Note the lack of OHE flashes on the nose end. In November the loco was outshopped in blue livery and numbered "1".

photo Terry Phillips courtesy Alex Lawson.

1971. In its first fresh coat of BR Blue Livery with Full Yellow Ends, 1 SCAFELL PIKE runs a coal train, probably from Toton to Bescot, past Branston in Staffordshire on 16/11/1971. The loco never carried the D prefix in blue livery.

photo Brian Lee/Rail Photo Archive.

1975. With plated boiler steps and one 44 001 number per side, SCAFELL PIKE heads a Toton bound mixed freight at Pye Hill. 01/09/1975.

Photo Les Gregory.

1976. With its second number now applied per side, 44 001 is seen at rest on Toton TMD on 15/08/1976.

D2 - 44 002

1959. D2 HELVELLYN awaiting entry to traffic at Derby Works in August/September 1959. The loco has no OHE flashes.

photographer unknown.

1961. D2 HELVELLYN at Euston in March 1961, in the company of EE Type 4 (later class 40) D225. The loco is in as built condition with all over lined Brunswick Green livery with green nose end, but with the addition of OHE flashes, probably in late 1960, and the removal of the flap over the boiler water fill point.

photo Les Morton collection.

1978. 44 002 HELVELLYN reversing onto Toton DMD.  16/08/1978. The loco still has numbers at each bodyside end and has three OHE flashes on the nose end, but has no nameplates by this time.

photo Phil Lindsey.

D3 - 44 003

1960. D3 SKIDDAW powers the 1 35pm Euston - Perth past Thurncote. The loco is yet to receive OHE flashes, so is as-built on 04/06/1960.

photo courtesy Ben Groovey Darby's Oh My Goodness Facebook Page.

1961. D3 SKIDDAW running light engine at Crewe in 1961. The loco is now sporting OHE flashes and 5A shedplate.

photo Brian Townsley.

1963. D3 SKIDDAW at Derby Works on 03/08/1963. With small yellow warning panel, 18A shedplate and blue star insignias.

photo Peter Simpson.

1970. D3 SKIDDAW passing Normanton on Soar northbound in September 1970. Still sporting the D prefix, the loco remains in economy green livery with small yellow ends, with unplated boiler steps and grille and standard positions for the OHE flashes.

photo J2379rmweb.

1973. At the very beginning of 1973 D3 SKIDDAW is seen at Bescot Yard with newly painted full yellow nose end, carried only for a couple of months. The economy green livery painted in 1966 is showing so much wear that the original grey solebar stripe is partially visible.

photographer unknown, courtesy Nigel Ratledge.

1973. Now in blue livery with full yellow ends, 3 SKIDDAW sits by the fueller at Toton MPD on 09/09/1973.

photo Simon Renshaw.

D4 - 44 004

1960. D4 GREAT GABLE at St Pancras. The photo is dated 21/06/59, but suspect this should be 1960, as the loco hadnt entered traffic on the former, and the loco had OHE flashes in 1961.

photographer unknown courtesy Mike Kerry.

1961. D4 GREAT GABLE arrives into Lancaster with a service from the North in 1961. The loco now has the OHE flashes.

photographer unknown, courtesy Paul Strathdee.

1966. D4 GREAT GABLE at Toton MPD, soon after being the first Peak locomotive to be turned out in the new corporate BR blue livery with full yellow ends. October 1966. Note the extra OHE flashes next to the BR emblems, unique to this loco. D4 was the only class 44 to run in blue with D prefix. The crosses on the battery boxes are prominent in this view, something shared with class 45, but not class 46. photographer unknown courtesy Mike Kerry.

1973. 4 GREAT GABLE at rest at Toton DMD in 1973. The loco lost the D prefix at Intermediate Overhaul in October 1972.

photographer unknown/Colour Rail.

1980. 44 004 GREAT GABLE, without plates, at Frisby on the Wreake on the Leicester - Peterborough line working 8E12 1430 Toton - Whitemoor.  10/04/1980.

photo Phil Lindsey.

D5 - 44 005

1959. D5 (later 44 005) Cross Fell at Derby MPD soon after entering traffic. The boiler water fill flap is still in situ, and no OHE flashes present.

photo David Hills collection.

1961. D5 CROSS FELL leaving Preston on a southbound express, almost certainly in 1961, given the OHE flashes and lack of small yellow warning panel.

1977. 44 005 CROSS FELL, sadly without nameplates, passes East Goscote hauling the Peaks Express Railtour on 1/10/1977. Note the numbers are at both ends.

photo Phil Davinson.

D6 - 44 006

1960. D6 WHERNSIDE in as-built condition without OHE flashes is seen at Carlisle Upperby during 1960.

photo Keith Long.

1961. In late 1960 or early 1961 D6 WHERNSIDE had OHE flashes applied to the bodysides and nose-ends, the latter in a unique position for the class, as seen in this 1961 photo of the loco at Euston having arrived from the North West.

photographer unknown courtesy Ben Darby "Oh My Goodness" Facebook Page.

1970. D6 WHERNSIDE at Toton MPD in September 1970. Despite appearances the loco is still in lined Brunswick Green livery, but with full yellow ends, the only member of the class to carry this style. note no shedplate bolts on this end.

1973. Now numbered 6, WHERNSIDE runs past the entrance to Toton DMD sometime in 1973. One of a handful of Peaks to run in green livery with no D prefix, the loco also became the only Peak to run in blue never carrying its pre TOPS number when it was overhauled later in the year. the shedplate bolts are still on this end of the loco.photo courtesy of Ben Groovey Darby via his Oh My Goodness Facebook Page.

1976. Just eighteen days before being put into store from which there was no return, 44 006 WHERNSIDE was supplied by Toton, along with 45 041 ROYAL TANK REGIMENT, to work the Nottingham to Birmingham, and return, leg of The Cornishman Railtour on 13/11/1976. Here, the pair have relieved D1013 WESTERN RANGER, for the return to Nottingham. 44 006 is carrying two numbers on each side that were applied at Toton early in the year around the same time as the nameplates were removed. This end of the locomotive is devoid of the uniquely placed Overhead Electric flash that the loco had carried for most of its days and also has no shedplate bolts which it had on the No2 end.

D7 - 44 007

1960. D7 INGLEBOROUGH, possibly at Trafford Park MPD, but definitely in 1960, in as-built condition with only the addition of the shedplate bolts. The boiler water flap remains in situ, but probably not for much longer.

1960. D7 Ingleborough standing at Euston having arrived with a train from the North West in 1960.

photo Les Morton, courtesy David Hills.

1961. D7 INGLEBOROUGH seen, this time, at Preston , now with the addition of OHE flashes. The boiler filler flap has gone!

photo Geoffrey Robinson, courtesy John Robinson.

1979. 44 007 INGLEBOROUGH, sans nameplates, leaving March TMD, before returning to Toton after working the morning freight down on 27/09/1979. The loco later worked the evening Spondon - Tinsley.

photo Gordon Edgar.

1979. 44 007 (INGLEBOROUGH), would spend its final in-traffic Christmas in the unusual surroundings of the Toton Wagon Repair Shop, along with 44 004, and probably 44 008. 24/12/1979

photo Simon David Coope.

1980. 44 007 INGLEBOROUGH, denamed, has just deposited its trainload of ballast at Kegworth and is departing back to Toton on Sunday 24th August 1980. note no OHE flash on side of loco.

photo Mike Kerry.

D8 - 44 008

1960. D8 PENYGHENT appears to have a fault judging by the dark stains at the far end of the loco on 24/07/1960 photo at Camden MPD.

photographer unknown.

1973. In blue livery with full yellow ends, 8 PENYGHENT at Toton MPD on 09/09/1973.

photo Simon Renshaw.

1974. 44 008 PENYGHENT trundles towards St Marys Yard at Derby, probably on the morning freight from Toton on 29/06/1974.

photo Simon Renshaw.

1979. 44 008, without PENYGHENT nameplates, heads the evening Spondon - Tinsley freight out of Toton Yard on 15/05/1979. Note the extra number towards the rear, applied by Steve Lawn in 1976.

photo Russell Saxton.

1979. 44 008 PENYGHENT, without nameplates, but freshly "done up to the nines", passing Barrow upon Soar on 8E12, the afternoon Toton - Whitemoor, on 22/08/1979.

photo Giles Brown.

D9 - 44 009

1960. No1 end view of D9 SNOWDON at rest on Carlisle Upperby depot, 15/10/1960. The loco is as-built, still without the recently introduced OHE flashes. These would be applied soon after in late 1960 or early 1961.

photo David McCulloch.

1969. After its accident in early 1969, D9 SNOWDON was fitted with a headcode panel on No1 end, but No2 end, depicted here, remained as before including the long handrails on the crewmen's doors. The loco is on a train recovering sleepers on 13/07/1969 at Bulwell Common during the lifting of the redundant Great Central route hereabouts. Note the three OHE flashes on the nose. The side flash is further back than normal.

photo Thomas Boustead with colour added by Mark Judd.

1970. D9 SNOWDON with the headcode panel and short handrails at number one end, as seen here at Toton in 1970. The loco remained in economy green livery with small yellow ends, although at this end the panel was larger than those applied to class 45 and 46. Note the taillight grabrails as well.

photo Iron Felix.

1973. 9 SNOWDON heads a coal train southwards towards Kegworth station in August 1973. note the long door handles on the near end, but short on No 1 end. The side OHE flash is still further along the bodyside than normal.

photo Mike Mather.

1977. The unique 44 009 trundles through Toton Jct, taking the Low Level line towards Trent. The details to point out are the rebuilt cab with headcode panel - short cab handrails this end and it has a dual braked bogie as well. March 1977

photo Nick Bircham.

1978. 44 009 SNOWDON, without plates, arrives at Spondon to pick up the acetic tanks of the 8E01 freight to Tinsley on 18/09/1978. The loco finished life with the dominos in its solitary headcode panel.

photo Trevor Dorrington.

1978. 44 009 SNOWDON, number two end on, marshals the acetic tanks of the 8E01 freight to Tinsley on 18/09/1978.

D10 - 44 010

1960. Brand new D10 TRYFAN at Derby on 13/02/1960.

photographer unknown

D10 - 44 010

1960. D10 TRYFAN  has just been attached to a Manchester Central - St Pancras train at Derby on 10/03/1960.

photographer Alan Sugden, courtesy Ian Sugden.

1960. D10 TRYFAN in as-built livery is seen at unknown location, probably on the West Coast Main Line, with an express. The differing grilles fitted to D9 and D10 are prominent in this photo,  dated by the lack of OHE flash on the bodyside near the No 2 end door. The boiler water filler flap has been removed.

photographer unknown.

1967. D10 TRYFAN runs towards Derby MPD towing an EE 650hp shunter on 27/05/1967.

photographer Anthony F Cole, courtesy Andy Cole.

1972 D10 TRYFAN on the Test House at Derby Works on 08/12/1972. The loco would enter the paint shop after this and would be released to traffic eight days later in BR Blue livery as 10.

photographer Brian Ireland, courtesy Steve Ireland.

1976. 44 010 TRYFAN at Derby, light engine from Toton to collect some trucks from Chaddesden sidings on 25/11/76. The loco had been in store at Toton from 07/02/76, when the nameplates were removed for "safe keeping" until 17/04/1976, being reinstated as a result of the withdrawal of 44 003. Note the twin numbers per side, which 010 would carry until withdrawal the following May.
