46 028 - D165

1965. D165 at the head of a rake of empty stock at Neasden CS having worked an excursion from Mansfield to Wembley on 03/04/1965. The loco has the larger style yellow panel applied to many D138 - D165 and would be one of the few to carry this through to its refurb in July that year, when the split centre headcode would be removed in favour of the familiar integral centre panel.

photographer unknown courtesy Nick Bircham.

1972. D165 at Bristol Bath Road on 13/04/1972. The loco emerged from its 1965 Brush refurb on 28/02/66 still in lined Brunswick Green livery(at a time when Derby was eschewing the lining), but with a standard size small yellow panel. The split centre headcode was replaced with the full centre panel and bottom grille fitted to sides. The loco was the last of its class to remain green until entering Derby on 26/09/72 and emerging in blue with full yellow ends on 21/12/72. Note the lack of air reservoir beneath the battery boxes, the loco not yet dual braked. Again, this was done at the overhaul in late 1972.
