Gallery 45 023 - 45 033

The aim is to have a photo of each stage of each loco's life re livery, nose-end, renumbering etc.  PLEASE DO NOT REPRODUCE/SHARE ANY PHOTO's from the site without prior permission. The photo's herein have been supplied with the courtesy of the respective owners.

45 023 - D54

1962. D54 sits in Crewe Works Yard prior to entering traffic in August 1962. Of note are the taillight grabrails, only D50 - D57 were built with these. Also note the yellow painted grabrails above the headcode panels and blue star multiple working vinyls.

photographer unknown.

1967. D54 THE ROYAL PIONEER CORPS, still with blue star insignias, resides at Saltley MPD on 12/02/1967. note the shedplate bolts on the cabside.

Saturday 17/08/1963 - BR Class 45 Peak Class D17 coming off Ribblehead Viaduct into the station on 1M88 - Up Waverley from Edinburgh to St Pancras. The loco is as-built, but with the addition of small yellow warning panels, the 55A Holbeck shedplate and also the taillight grabrails, an early recipient of the latter, indeed.

1980. 45 024 at Exeter St Davids having arrived with 2B37 1815 from Paignton on 11/08/1980. The loco was withdrawn with fire damage just over two months later.

45 025 - D19

1961. D19 entered traffic from Derby Works on 31/12/1960 and is seen at Derby MPD soon after. The nose end OHE flash at this No 2 end is slightly lower.

1973. The onlooking spotters are missing out on the thrash, as 19 makes a vigourous exit from Darlington station with the mid- morning Newcastle - Cardiff service. Late 1973.

1975. 45 025 working 1V62 0704 Derby - Plymouth on 22/05/1975. The loco will show headcodes until the end of the year before the blinds are switched to 0000.

1981. The sun sets on 45025 on Wednesday 15th April 1981, and quite literally will do the following month, when it will simply be switched-off as one of the hit-listed locos slated for withdrawal as part of the Class 45 run-down plan. The former D19 is seen departing from Gloucester Station with 1V96 1340 Newcastle to Swansea train, which on this day was unusually formed of a rake of vacuum-braked Mark I's, in the run-up to Easter. Note the 41A stencil below the two small bolts, evidence that it carried a bona-fide shedplate in the 60's.

45 026 - D21

1961. Brand new D21 is seen on M860 test run from Derby Works in the Peak District in late February 1961.

1968. D21 at Gloucester Horton Road depot on 10/03/68. After refurbishing, the loco is now in blue livery, has a centre headcode panel and bottom grille, but the boiler steps and grille remain unplated.

45 027 - D24

1967. D24 of 55A Holbeck awaits the tip at Birmingham NS on The Westbound Devonian, Bradford - Paignton which it will work to Bristol Temple Meads. February Half-Term 1967

1968. The unique D24 shunts vans at Bristol TM in 1967 or 1968. Thel oco is in BR blue livery with alphabet style numbering on the cab sides, the only loco to appear like this. Also note, no BR emblem.

45 028 - D27

1961. D27 departs Derby on 1V39 1015am Bradford Forster Square - Paignton which it would work to Bristol TM. 11/11/1961. The loco is as-built without tailight grabrails, only a 55H Neville Hill shedplate has been added.

photographer unknown courtesy Fred Castor.

1974. To support the Halifax Holiday Fortnight, 1D20 0931 Leeds - Skegness started back at Sowerby Bridge(0658) on 13/07/1974 and is seen passing Dryclough Jct in the hands of 27. The loco, looking every inch a Holbeck specimen, would presumably be replaced at Leeds.

45 029 - D30

1966. D30 being towed by D5257 at Derby on 09/04/1966.

1972. 30 ex-Works at Derby, having returned from Leicester after a test run piloting 1M51 0801 Manchester - St Pancras. 12/07/1972.

photo the late Dave Thorpe courtesy Steve Thorpe.

1983. 45 029 runs LD from Derby Holding Sidings on 31/08/1983. The loco has smaller numbers and has lost a boiler step cover. Also note the 41A sticker between the marker lights. 029 was the only 45 to be reinstated to traffic from the mass withdrawals of 1980 and early 1981.

photo John Goodale.

1988. 97 410 (45 029) leaves the stabling point at Tyne Yard for an afternoon of shunting in the adjacent sidings. June 1st 1988. The loco spent its final year or so in departmental stock, hence the change of number. The missing step plate seems to have been replaced.

photo Mike Kerry.

45 030 - D31

1961. An early photo on an unknown 1961 day shows D31 during a stop at Sheffield Midland, in as-built condition working 1M28 1130 Bradford FS - St Pancras.

1967. The diverted 1V33 0644 Bradford Exchange - Penzance storms through Bishops Cleeve in the charge of D31 on 10/09/1967. The loco has centre split panel with taillight grabrails in the box headcode position, most likely this having been done at Darlington Works. Only D32 had this layout as well.

photo the late Bill Potter courtesy Tom Cullimore.

45 031 - D36

1962. D36 removes an unknown sibling from 1N28 7 55am Swansea - Newcastle which it has towed in-train from north of Derby to Sheffield. Recently repainted D79(right) awaits to take over. D36 was one of the last to remain without the small yellow warning panel as seen here on 14/08/1962.

photographer unknown, permission being sought.

1964. D36 rests at Gloucester Horton Road MPD on 03/09/1964, after having worked down from Newcastle, judging by the 1V70 in the headcode panel.

photo Patrick O'Brien.

1972. A beautiful sunny day at Plymouth finds ex-Works 36 in the company of 21 awaiting northbound departures on 22/07/1972. The 1V36 headcode suggests that 36 had worked down on the Friday Only 2143 from Derby and been replaced here for the onward journey to Penzance. The return train 1M19, 1240 Penzance - Derby was 36's train back north.

photo Roger Geach, not to be reproduced elsewhere, please.

1977. 45 031 pulling to a stop with 1V82 1023 Manchester - Plymouth at Exeter St Davids on 27/04/1977. The 0000 headcode appears to have collapsed in disarray.

photo Roger Geach, not to be reproduced elsewhere, please.

1978. Passing Tresulgan on its long journey north on 06/06/1978 is 45 031 on 6M26 1805 St Blazey - Longport clay. The loco was wearing domino centre split panels at both ends at this stage.

photo Roger Geach, not to be reproduced elsewhere, please.

1979.  45 031 at Taunton on a morning northbound cross country service, sometime in 1979. The loco has a central panel at this (No2) end only, split centre the other end.

photo Mark Wightman.

1980. Now with flush front and marker lights at No2 end, 45 031 ploughs a furrow past Luton Hoo with what is believed to be Dunstable - Ripple Lane empties. No1 end remained split centre domino at this time, and in this format the loco would be withdrawn in 1981.

45 032 - D38

1967. D38 has brought a service likely from St Pancras into Derby Platform three on 27/05/1967

1973. Penzance Long Rock on Sunday 30/09/1973. 38 takes a well earned breather having made yet another trip to the Cornish extremities.

1976. Displaying the corporate 0000 headcode, 45 032 approaches Stoke Canon with 6B36, the MWFO 1220 Avonmouth to Exeter City Basin loaded bitumen tanks, on Wednesday 16th June 1976. photo and text Martin Stoolman.

1976. Just over a month later from the previous shot, 45 032 is adding another 310 miles to the clock working 1V86 1035 Leeds - Paignton seen running along the seawall at Dawlish.

1981. 45 032 awaits its fate at Swindon Works, June 1981.photo Paul Barlow.

45 033 - D39

1982.  45 033 is seen at Nottingham Station on Thursday 8th April 1982 after being detached from 1D97, the 1601hrs Pre-Easter Relief train from London St Pancras. A month later, the loco would have former number 39 painted on the bodyside at this end.

photo Trev Dorrington.

1982. 45 033 waits for the Road at Exeter St Davids on 22/05/1982. The train is the 1V85 1000 Bradford - Paignton. note the repainted 39 at the near No1 end, applied after 8th April
