Gallery 45 034 - 45 044

The aim is to have a photo of each stage of each loco's life re livery, nose-end, renumbering etc.  PLEASE DO NOT REPRODUCE/SHARE ANY PHOTO's from the site without prior permission. The photo's herein have been supplied with the courtesy of the respective owners.

45 034 - D42

1964. Captured on an unknown date in May 1964, D42 pauses at Gloucester Eastgate in charge of 1N84 2 15pm Bristol TM - York. Note the lack of taillight grabrails, but the loco is carrying blue star multiple working badges on its small yellow warning panel and a shedplate. All other details are as-built.

photo Les Hyde.

             1978. 45 034 works into platform 8 at Sheffield with possibly 1V98 1620 Newcastle - Cardiff on 09/05/1978.

photo Mike Farrington.

1981. Working light Meldon Quarry - Exeter HS past Upton Pyne at 1900 on 29/06/1981 is 45 034.

photo Paul Barlow.

1984. 45 034 shares some rest time with 45 044 at Buxton TMD 24/11/1984

              1986. 45 034 at Peak Forest on 01/07/1986.

45 035 - D44

1966. D44 blowing steam at York on 19/02/1966. The loco appears to be going to work 1V43, believed to be 1030 Newcastle - Plymouth and is in very good nick, suggesting a recent overhaul. The loco is without taillight grabrails and would be a late member of the fleet to have received the lined Brunswick Green livery, abandoned later in the year in favour of an unlined "economy" green livery.

1980. 45 035 at Exeter SD working 1V94 1432 Leeds - Plymouth on 20/11/1980. The darkness accentuates the squint domino panels.

45 036 - D45

1961. Has a Peak ever looked better. D45 at Derby in September 1961 having just entered traffic. The last loco to receive the nose OHE flash in this position.

photo courtesy Ben Groovey Darby, "Oh My Goodness" Facebook Page

1975. 45 was more than likely the last 45 to run on the mainline with an original number, being renumbered in May 1975. Here, the loco is seen at Carlisle on what looks like 1S24, the overnight St Pancras - Glasgow service in the early hours of 23/03/1975.

photo Andrew Armstrong.

45 037 - D46

1967. Photos of D46 in green livery of any form are rare, indeed. Here, the loco is at Saltley MPD on 21/05/1967 in economy green with small yellow warning panels. The loco was the first Derby built spilt-centre headcode loco to have the OHE flashes positioned thus.

     1977. 45 037 running along the seawall at Dawlish with 1V89 1223 Manchester - Paignton on 03/09/1977.

1984. 45 037 passes Clasper Village with 4M19 Heaton CS - Red Bank CS ecs on an unknown date, probably 1984.

1988. 45037 ECLIPSE is seen being removed from 1M28, the 16.11 York to Liverpool (via Birmingham) service, at Derby Station on 7th June 1988. The train which is predominantly formed on Mark II Air Conditioned coaches, will be worked forward from Derby by 47655. photo Trevor Dorrington.

45 038 - D48

1967. 08/05/1967 and D48 is seen at Saltley MPD resting between duties.

1978. 1E94 0825 Taunton - Newcastle arrives at Chesterfield behind be-dominoed 45 038. The loco was the last 45/0 to be converted to marker lights by Derby Works in April 1981.

45 039 - D49

1965.  D49 THE MANCHESTER REGIMENT in immaculate condition prior to its naming ceremony on 09/10/1965. The loco is still without taillight grabrails and the OHE flashes are now adjacent to the headcode indicators.

1966. D49 THE MANCHESTER REGIMENT brings an unknown rake of passenger stock into Bristol TM from the west on 20/08/1966.

1978. 45 039 THE MANCHESTER REGIMENT runs LD at Plymouth, possibly having worked 0635 from Bristol Temple Meads. It is just over a month since outshopping from Derby Works after its final classified repair.

45 040 - D50

1978. Sporting dominoes, but with a recently removed nameplate,

45 040 THE KING'S SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY departs Worcester Shrub Hill with a northbound freight on 12/06/1978.

photo Keith Riley.

1983. 45 040 THE KING'S SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY at Plymouth awaiting the arrival of 1E31 Penzance - Newcastle which it would take forward on 23/07/1983. The climb up Hemerdon was particularly taxing on the loco and it was amongst those longest out of Works when the withdrawals recommenced the following year, but instead of the cutters torch, the loco found itself having a Light Repair. Note the "lost" badge on the nameplate.

photo John Goodale.

1988.  45 040 enjoys an extension to its working life as 97412 seen here resting at York on February 24th 1988. It was on of five such that became departmental locos 97409 - 413, converted at March TMD in October 1987 where the field divert system was disconnected to reduce their maximum speed. They then went on to work primarily around the north east until August 1988 on engineering trains in connection with the ECML electrification.

photo Mike Kerry.

45 041 - D53

1962/3. An early photo of D53 arriving at Bristol TM, presumably from Bath Green Park, given the 2B93 headcode. In as-built condition, the loco sports the taillight grabrails and small yellow panel. The allocation shedplate is underneath the number. Also of note is the split centre headcode panel, later replaced, and the loco is unnamed.

1967. A couple of months after refurb, D53 ROYAL TANK REGIMENT is seen at Saltley SP. September 1967

1977. Nick Edwards captures 45 041 ROYAL TANK REGIMENT at Penzance, before climbing aboard 1E61 1808 Penzance - Sheffield on 26/10/78 for a "Hellfire" run up-country in the dark.

1986. Without nameplate, 45 041 ROYAL TANK REGIMENT is seen at Durham on 11/10/1986. The train is 1M32 1617 Newcastle - Liverpool.

photo Brian Sherrington.

45 042 - D57

1962. Although new, D57 is showing enough workstain to suggest it is "in traffic" at Crewe Works in July 1962. The loco with an upgraded power unit was being used as a test bed for the Brush Type 4(later class 47) and the 2D57 headcode suggests a local service into North Wales. One of the eight locos of the class built with tailight grabrails and with yellow painted rails above the headcode, it lacks the blue star multiple working vinyls that were applied to D54, D55 and D56 which it preceded off the production line, but after D53 which also had them.

photo Mike "f22photographie".

1984. Summer Saturday mornings saw a procession of northbound holiday trains at Dawlish, usually accompanied by fans of the respective class of loco "bellowing". On 11/08/1984 0910 Paignton - Newcastle was in the hands of 45 042, with two such admirers..no names.

1976. The first four Peaks ( 2 x 45, 2 x46) to receive the new marker lights all retained headboard bracketry. The last of these, released from Derby on 03/04/1976, was 45 043 THE KING'S OWN ROYAL BORDER REGIMENT seen at Settle on a northbound express believed to be 1S49 0715 Nottingham - Glasgow on 27/04/1976.

45 044 - D63

1963. D63 off the road at Tyseley on 19/04/1963. In as-built condition with blue star vinyls on the small yellow warning panels. Of note is the 17A shedplate under the number as opposed to the nose end.
