45 012 - D108

1961. D108 is seen prior to entering traffic having worked the Crewe Works test train on 26/06/1961

photo John Turner 53A Models of Hull collection.

1982. 45 012 to the left being refuelled at Goodrington sidings in readiness for working north on 1E29 0828 Paignton - Sheffield. 21/08/1982. The loco was easily identifiable at this end for a couple of years given the large dent. Also note the 41A sticker between the marker lights. 46 039 is to the right.

photo Paul Barlow.

1985. 45 012 is still sporting "that dent" on 22/03/1985 as it approaches departure time with the 1155 Newcastle - Sunderland which it was working instead of the normal DMU.

photo Robin Trinder.

1987.  45 012 stands between platforms one and two at Sheffield on 30th May 1987. The loco had worked the ecs for the Sheffield - Skegness train that morning and is here waiting for the return to arrive with 45 106 before taking the stock back to Heaton.

photo Mark Hollingsworth.

1987. 45 012 WYVERN II works a southbound rake of stone empties, probably from Leeds Balm Road to Peak Forest, through Normanton.

photo Danny Carter.

1988. The Pathfinder Railtours Conway Crusader 1Z43 0350 Reading - Blaenau Ffestiniog is seen at Chester in the hands of 45 012 WYVERN II on 17/07/1988.

photo Brian Sherrington.

45 013 - D20

1961. D20 stands at Neville Hill depot in 1961. The loco is as-built, in lined Brunswick Green livery with no yellow ends and prior to having taillight grabrails fitted. Also note the short handrails on the second man's door, the first Peak to receive these. The loco has no OHE flash on the nose-end and shows no signs of having had one.

photo Wally Hobson courtesy David Hills.

1967. D20 awaits departure from Derby working 1V43 1030 Newcastle - Cardiff on 11/10/1967. Non standard position of OHE flash at this end.

1967. D20 after arrival at Cardiff General on 1V70, the 0720 from York. 1967 date unknown.

photo Bob Masterman.

19787. 45 013 passing Hemerdon with 1E21, the northbound Cornishman, from Penzance to Leeds on 21/06/1978.

photo Roger Geach.

1982. The last summer Saturday of the 1982 season was particularly mucky and, thus, 45 013's boiler is required on the 1V85 0821 Bradford - Paignton, here seen at Bristol TM. 02/10/1982.

photo Paul Barlow.

1987. 45 013 sits at Manchester Victoria on 14/02/87. The loco looks striking/garish (delete as appropriate!) with addition of white lining and orange cantrail stripe, plus double numbers, "Tinsley Snail" logos and number on the front end, which accentuates the narrower marker lights.

photo Steve Kemp.

45 014 - D137

1967. D137 THE CHESHIRE REGIMENT at Saltley MPD on 03/09/1967.

photo Anthony F Cole, courtesy Andy Cole.

1977. 45 015 on the Test House at Derby Works, 08/02/1977. The headcode panel remains in situ, albeit with dominoes, at a time when most locos were receiving marker lights. More than likely, this was due to less corrosion, as these panels were fitted at refurb in the late sixties.

photo Mike Kerry.

1981. 45 015 awaiting right away from Bristol TM with 1E38 1934 to Newcastle on 13/03/1981.

photo Keith Long.

1963. D15 working 1S64 "The Waverley" St Pancras - Edinburgh express over the Settle and Carlisle route seen near Selside. The loco has the taillight grabrails fitted and still has long handrails.

photo Geoffrey Robinson courtesy John Robinson.

1978. 45 018 shunts coaching stock at Plymouth on 16/10/1978. Not long out of its last overhaul, the loco is fitted with experimental bogies. The white panel on the drivers door denoted this.

photo Roger Geach, not to be reproduced elsewhere, please.

1980. 45 018 awaiting departure from Newcastle with 1V87 0908 Newcastle - Paignton on Saturday 14th June 1980. The loco is in its final guise, just over six months from withdrawal. Note the experiment plate on the drivers door, a legacy from the loco having experimental bogies fitted a couple of years before.

photo John Atkinson.

45 019 - D33

1961. Having entered traffic on 19/06/1961, D33 is seen within the first two months in traffic at an unknown depot, possibly Cricklewood West or Trafford Park. The loco is as-built, having not received a shedplate yet, Derby MPD were never that bothered putting them on, probably anticipating that the loco would soon be reallocated elsewhere, to 82A Bristol Bath Road in the case of D33.

unknown photographer, permission being sought.

1967. 21/05/1967 and D33 is seen freshly repainted in unlined economy green livery at Saltley. Three months later and it went into Derby Works for refurb and painting BR Blue!

1974. A rather tatty 33 stabled at Doncaster TMD sometime in early 1974, just before entering Derby for overhaul and renumbering to 45 019.

photo Simon Renshaw.

1977. 45 019 heads a short train of cement presflo's at Bristol Temple Meads on 31/01/1977, possibly heading for Taunton. The loco is still carrying its 0000 headcode at this stage.

photo Dale Green.

1978. 45019 was fitted with a non standard panel at No 2 end after incurring damage to its already bedominoed specimen. Believed to have been fitted at York , the replacement was two class 47/55 style marker lights and a red painted surround. The first record we have of this arrangement is 21/3/78 and it was still like this on 2/9/78 when approaching Abbotswood Junction with 1E22 1000 Newquay - Newcastle.

photo Keith Riley.

1978. No 1 end view of 45 019 hauling 1E75 0950 Bristol TM - Newcastle up Lickey Incline on 25/07/1978.

photographer unknown.

1979. 45 019 at Newton Abbot on a westbound passenger service in early 1979. The panel at No2 end is now yellow, the loco continuing like this until overhaul in 1980.

photographer unknown.

1980. Immaculately turned out, as always, from Derby Works, 45 019 awaits its first traffic assignment on Derby Etches Park HS on 18/11/1980.

photo Mike Kerry.

45 020 - D26

1961.  D26 at rest on Neville Hill MPD. 11/06/1961

photo Keith Long.

1968.  D26 at Bristol Temple Meads having arrived from the north with D101 in June 1968. The incorrect headcode suggests D101 may have failed. D26 is six months or so away from being the only class 45 to wear a full yellow end on lined Brunswick Green livery. Note D101 is in Toton Blue livery from summer 1966, with no BR emblem and small yellow panels.

photo Kevin Auger.

1969. Though not 100% confirmed this is believed to be D26 making a rare appearance on a coal train in the Welsh Valleys, January 1969. The loco is believed to be the only lined Brunswick Green liveried class 45 to sport a full yellow nose end.

photo Bob Masterman.

1981. 45 020 on the Sea Wall at Teignmouth working 1V78 0837 Leeds - Paignton on 20/06/1981. Note the narrower marker lights and higher position of the OHE flashes.

photo Paul Barlow.

45 021 - D25

1961. D25 in the middle shares time on Neville MPD with D17(farside) and D29(nearside) on 17/08/1961. The loco is as built with short door handrails and no taillight grabrails. Note the standard position of the OHE flash on front end, unlike D17.

photo Keith Long.

1966. D25, in the new economy green livery applied in May 1966, is seen at Carlisle on 1S49 1025 Leeds - Glasgow Central.

photo courtesy Ben "Groovey" Darby "Oh My Goodness Facebook Page.

1969. 25 was the only class 45 to carry economy green livery with a full yellow end, and is seen as such whilst hauling 1S68 St Pancras - Glasgow Thames Clyde Express near Blea Moor in February 1969.

photo Gavin Morrison.

1978. 45 021 at Darlington working 1E04 0730 Birmingham NS - Newcastle on 15/10/1978. Fresh from its final overhaul, the loco now has flush front and marker lights, the latter with a narrower gap than standard. The loco would be withdrawn two years later.

photo Mike Kerry.

45 022 - D60

1964. D60 Lytham St Annes at Belper hauling 1P77, an afternoon Manchester Central - Derby stopper. The loco is as-built, thus no taillight grabrails and small yellow panels, only the nameplates are added. September 1964.

photographer unknown from Historic Belper Facebook Page

1967. D60 Lytham St Annes at Derby on or around 11/07/1967. The first class 45 to go through the refurbishment programme, the loco is sporting the new central headcode panel and bottom grille on the bodyside. Also , D60 was the first of either production series to receive air brakes, as seen by the air reservoir slung below the battery boxes and the extra pipe on the drivers side of the coupling hook.

photo with thanks, Robert Carroll.

1980. 45 022 Lytham St Annes at Taunton SP on 30/08/1980.
