45 141 - D82

1964. D82 heads 4E30, a northbound van train, through Kentish Town in 1964. The only known member of the class to receive a larger yellow front end panel, the loco is yet to receive its taillight grabrails and still has longer handrails by the driver's door. At Classified Repair in 1966, the loco reverted to a small yellow panel, being released on 22/03.

photographer unknown.

1966. With the small yellow warning panel back to standard size, D82 is seen arriving at Derby on 03/09/1966 working 1S64 the northbound "Waverley" 0905 St Pancras - Edinburgh.

1968. D83 at the head of 8X53 0500 Heaton - Coatbridge conveying withdrawn NER Tyneside electric EMU's on their final journey on 06/02/1968. Looking like a standard BR blue liveried loco, the lack of BR emblem, plus the numbers on the cabsides gives away that it is a "Toton Blue" loco, albeit with full yellow ends, the only loco to carry this particular colour scheme.

1986. Here, the beam sent out by the high intensity headlight is well captured on 45 145, waiting to leave St Pancras on the 1945 service to Derby on Sunday 16th March 1986.

45 146 - D66

1986. Five minutes from departure is 45 146 on the 1945 St Pancras - Derby on 16/02/1986. Crewe Works's strange decision on number placement, only one BR emblem, and the high intensity headlight do nothing for the aesthetics of the loco.

photo John Goodale, about to run round!

45 147 - D41

1978. Passing Leicester North box as it arrives at Leicester, 45 147 is working 1M04 0720 Sheffield - St Pancras..."The Master Cutler" on 19/09/1978. The loco is still carrying mixed headcode panels, the far No1 end being split centre domino.

1981. 45 148 has arrived at Plymouth with the 1V76 09.20 Liverpool - Penzance on 20/04/1981. The loco would go into Works just over a month later, and the headcode panel would be lost.

1986.  45 148 passes by Homedown level crossing , just south of Ashchurch, Gloucestershire, with the 6V70 Cliffe Vale - St Blazey on the 2nd of July 1986 at 1853. ETH fitted members of the class were starting to appear on this train by this time.

photo and words Tom Cullimore.

45 149 - D135

1971. D135 awaits attention to its front end at Derby Works on 15/01/1971. The loco had been involved in a collision with Type 2, D5278 at Tunstead whilst hauling 6V23 lime train to Margam on 05/01/1971, which inflicted terminal damage on the small Sulzer. It was also terminal for D135s split centre headcode panel, this being replaced with the standard centre panel for accident damged locos during a repair that was estimated at £2000.

1986.  January 16th 1986 was 45 149's turn to take 3V10 2131 Nottingham PCD - Plymouth vans forward from Nottingham.
