Gallery 45 001 - 45 011

The aim is to have a photo of each stage of each loco's life re livery, nose-end, renumbering etc.  PLEASE DO NOT REPRODUCE/SHARE ANY PHOTO's from the site without prior permission. The photo's herein have been supplied with the courtesy of the respective owners.

45 001 - D13

1961. D13 at Gainsborough in early February 1961 during a week of trials on freight in Lincolnshire. The loco is as-built, but already workworn after just over 3 months in service. The boxes and doors would be carried until October 1970. Note long door handrails and no taillight grabrails.

photo Thomas Frapp.

1968. D13 approaches Matlock on 5th May 1968 working 1C67 Manchester - St Pancras. Now in Br Blue, the loco still has the end doors, albeit welded, and headcode boxes, plus two OHE flashes, shorter door handrails and taillight grabrails.

photo Kirk Martin.

1973. D13 entered Derby Works on 05/04/1973 and was  quickly deemed unsuitable for conversion to an ETH 45/1, and thus became the first 45/0 in the new TOPS numbering on leaving Works on 27/04/1973. The loco is seen here at St Pancras prior to departure with 1D14 1650 to Nottingham on 19/05/1973.

photo Steve Hutchinson.

1978. Sporting dominoes, 45 001 departs Glasgow Central in March 1978. The train is likely to be 1M87 , the afternoon service to Nottingham which it would work to Leeds.

photo Paul Strathdee.

1984. 45 001 at Newcastle Central having arrived with 1E12 0828 SAGA special from Camborne on 24/09/1984.

45 002 - D29

1961. 1M88 The Up Waverley Edinburgh - St Pancras seen at Hellifield in the charge of D29 in late 1961/early 1962. The loco is as-built with no tailight grabrails.

1964. D29 heading south at Ais Gill on 4N25, probably a Kingmoor to Leeds or Healey Mills freight. 18/07/1964. Yellow warning panels and taillight grabrails have been added.

photo Geoffrey Robinson courtesy John Robinson.

1975. Showing a wrong headcode, 45 002 runs 1A69 0835 Penzance - Paddington past Moorswater on 13/03/75. The loco probably worked 1V92 Edinburgh - Plymouth the day before, then possibly the down newspapers from Plymouth to Penzance overnight. These trains were regular Peak workings at this time. Note the two loco numbers, the only box headcode 45/0 to be adorned as such.

1983. 45 002 at Ruddington reversing its single wagon load up to the branch ready to return to Leicester Humberstone road. Taken on a chilly January 23rd 1983, this trip working served the MOD depot at Ruddington until 1986?. The Great Central Railway North operate over this section of line today.

45 004 - D77

1961. D77 departs Gloucester Eastgate on 1V45 1243 Newcastle - Bristol TM. The photo is believed to be from Summer 1961, when D77 was allocated to St Philips Marsh during the initialisation of diesel traction on the North East-South West route. The loco is in as-built condition without small yellow warning panels, and still with long handrails.

photo Roger Smith.

1963. D77 un-named heads a southbound freight past Wetmore Sidings, Burton on Trent in 1963. The loco now has a small yellow panel.

photo Peter Gaston.

1979. 45 004 ROYAL IRISH FUSILIER coasts into Paignton to work the 1805 summer additional to Swindon. The loco is in good nick with nameplates present. 30/08/1979.

photo Paul Barlow.

1981. Isolated boiler loco 45 004  ROYAL IRISH FUSILIER   found itself in demand for Midland Mainline passenger work on 13/08/1981. Here seen at Leicester on 1P10 1204 St Pancras - Derby, having already worked down to St Pancras on 1C10 0649 ex Derby, and would work 1C76 1607 ex Derby after this.

45 005 - D79

1967. In Toton Blue livery applied in summer 1966, D79 sits at Saltley MPD on 22/10/1967. The shedplate is just about hanging on!

45 007 - D119

1967. D119 runs LD around the back of Derby Midland station on 27/05/1967. The loco was the last class 45 to remain in green livery.

photo Brian Sherrington.

45 008 - D90

1967. Here is D90 arriving at Cardiff General with the stock for 1N60 1420 Cardiff - York on 06/03/1967. Note : no taillight grabrails and the shedplate bolts. Six months later the loco would go for refurb and lose this front end design and livery.

Photo Bob Masterman.

1977. 1V71 The Cornishman from Leeds to Penzance glides away from Liskeard at Moorswater in the charge of 45 008, probably attached at Plymouth. The loco is carrying the 0000 headcode as interim measure before having dominoes applied later in the year. Note, also, the small disc below the headcode which covered the hole drilled to accommodate communication equipment when the loco worked the Royal Train earlier in its life.

photo Roger Geach, not to be reproduced elsewhere, please.

45 009 - D37

1971. Looking the worse for wear is D37 at Cardiff Canton sheds sometime in 1971. The loco is carrying the small "M" under the No1 end number and the boiler steps look recently plated. Also note the X on the battery box covers, something the class 46 didnt have and, below that, the air reservoir for the air brakes.

photo David Goodall.

1982. 1E29 0900 Paignton - Sheffield arrives at Exeter St Davids in the hands of 45 009 on 14/08/1982. The loco still has two BR emblems and a 41A sticker between the markers.

photo Paul Barlow.

1986. 45 009 passes centre road at Cardiff Central at 1008 on 07/05/1986 whilst working a Severn Tunnel Jct - Llandarcy train of tanks. Note only one BR Emblem and the patch between the marker lights where an unofficial 41A plate had been.

photo Roger Geach.

45 010 - D112

1981. Perhaps, the Greatest Bellow of All Time???  Steve Miles aka "Trowbridge" shows his appreciation for 45 010 from the rear cab as it powers the Paignton - Oxley ecs along the Sea Wall on 20/06/1981. 010 was a favourite among the Peak fraternity and looks fantastic, here, in its final guise.

photo Paul Barlow.

1984. 45 010 passes Clasper Village with 4V73 1850 Follingsby - Pengam liner on an unknown date, probably 1984.

photo Brian Sherrington.

45 011 - D12

1963. This undated photo of D12, believed to be at Saltley MPD, shows the loco with the added yellow warning panel and the recess, fitted only to D11 and D12, on the nose-end doors prominent. Also note the taillight grabrail which wasn't present when built. The photo is later than 15/09/1962 when the loco was reallocated to Cricklewood East. This shed didn't add the allocation shedplate to the loco, so the bolts from a previously fitted plate are visible on the left hand nose-end door. The OHE flash is lower than on D11.
