1958

Production of the first BR Sulzer Type 4's (later class 44) began in September 1958 at Derby Loco Works, alongside BR Sulzer Type 2 (class 24).

1961

1961 got off to a slow start regarding Peaks entering traffic, D85 emerging from Crewe on 6th February and Derby next to release a loco with D20 on 24th February. On 20th May, Derby turned out its last box headcode example, D30, with D31, released 3rd June, being the first with centre split headcode. Crewe turned out its last box headcode loco, D107, on 20th July, after its first centre split, D109 had appeared on 30th June.  D110 appeared next before their first built, D108, finally appeared on 28th July. With Derby being slower than Crewe, the decision was taken to move production of D50 - D67 to Crewe, after they had finished their current order up to D137. This enabled Derby to start work on the first locos with Brush electrical equipment (later class 46), and the first of these locos, D138, duly appeared on 21st October. The first loco to be turned out with the new small yellow panel on the nose end was D132 on 16th December.

1962

1962 started with six of D1 - D10 out of traffic in Works, and many of the later locos were having teething problems, too. But the fleet was now finding its way onto the routes and workings that were to be their staple in later years, and by years end all bar the final five were in service, and all would have the new yellow front end panels applied. One of the years most notable events was the arrival in traffic of D163, named Leicestershire and Derbyshire Yeomanry during construction and inaugurated at a ceremony at Derby Midland on 21/04/1962.

1963

The year started with just D189 - D193 awaiting entry to traffic and this duly happened on 26th January. The fleet continued to cement themselves to the routes and duties that would be their staple for years to come. Aesthetically, there was very little change through the year with all locos already carrying the small yellow end panels, so the only changes were the adding of taillight grabrails to the remainder of the Holbeck locos between D11 and D30.

1964

The fleet continued to nail down its staple workings in 1964, and very few aesthetic changes happened. A further handful of loco's would be named including D70 THE ROYAL MARINES.

1965

1965 would see the first major changes to the fleet. With continued problems of availability, BR decided on a refurbishment programme for the loco's with Brush Electrical Equipment. The four year contract for this was handed to Brush Electrical Machines at Loughborough. D154 entered Works in February and emerged on 1st October. Externally the loco lost its split centre headcode panel in favour of the integral centre style. The loco also had a small four-sided grille added to the lower bodyside. All loco's in the D138 - D173 batch were fitted with the centre headcode panel, which D174 - D193 had at construction, and all 56 locos had the bottom grille added.

The above official Brush Electrical Machines photo shows eight of the class at various stages of the refurb. Left to right on the near row are D168, D182, D176 and an unidentified member which can only be D146, given the larger warning panel and lack of taillight grabrails, and the fact that this photo is taken very late in 1965. In the second row is another one of those with the larger yellow panels, probably D165, the remaining three are likely to be from D138, D141, D155, D169, D188 and D189, possibly D156 or D193.

1966

1966 would see various members of the fleet receiving one of three new liveries, the biggest aesthetic changes so far. In April, the first loco, D72, would be turned out from Derby Works in an unlined green called Economy Green. It is believed this was done to save costs, but also time, as the Works was heavily involved in the completion of the BR Sulzer Type 2 fleet which required painting, along with supporting Crewe Works with the painting of Brush Type 4 locos. To further assist this, it seems that certain loco's were farmed out to Toton MPD for repainting. These appeared in the Toton Blue Livery as seen above. Finally, in October, the first loco's (D173, D4 and D186) appeared in the new BR corporate blue livery with full yellow ends.

The fleet still had plenty of work in Central Scotland, plus all the workings that they would be known for in their halcyon years, but also had Summer Workings booked to Newhaven and Ramsgate! They would make their first tentative forays West of Bristol, as well.

The Class 46 refurb programme continued apace, too. A busy year, all in all.

1967

1967 would be a year of firsts and lasts. Bringing about an end to locos being painted in green or Toton Blue, the first class 45 in BR Blue with full yellow nose ends, D69 would appear on 26th January, followed closely by sibling D68 (pictured left above). D68 would be the last 45 to be officially named - "Royal Fusilier". Around the same time the first class 45s, D60 and D53, would enter Derby Works for refurbishing...D60(photo thanks to Robert Carroll, centre above) appearing on 11th July in its new guise with centre headcode panel and bottom grille on the bodyside. D53 and eighteen more would similarly follow until the end of December when D87 and D13 would appear without the nose end changes orbottom grille. D60 would be the first of the production series' to be fitted with air brakes, the air reservoir being added below the battery boxes. Meanwhile, the class 46 refurbs were coming to an end at Brush, Loughborough, culminating in the release of D170 on 8th November. The loco is seen(above right) nearly four months later on 30/03/1968 nearing journey end at King Edward Bridge Jct with 1N77 0900 Liverpool - Newcastle. photo Dave Jolly.

In traffic, there was no changes to the sphere of operations, still making limited incursions west of Bristol, mostly in the Summer months. Otherwise, it was business as usual.

1968

Late Spring and Early Summer saw the twilight of workings on the through route from Derby to Manchester via Bakewell, a sad loss was this line that featured in the very first workings of the fleet. The chance to have a big diesel through the stunning scenery of the White Peak, as seen in David Hills' photo of an unidentified loco heading south over Monsal Head viaduct in 1967, would be gone forever.

The fleet itself continued to work to Manchester, via the Hope Valley Line, and overall the same duties as the previous two years were still in place, with further incursions being made as far as Paignton in the Summer.

Class 45 refurbishing continued apace, albeit without the changes to headcode panels and bottom grille addition. The first class 46s started their next Light Overhauls and were not repainted, leaving the remaining green members as such until their next overhaul in the early 1970's.

The end of steam on the network in August laid the way for a change in numbering policy with depots ordered to remove D prefixes from diesels. Only Holbeck seems to have adhered to this with their locomotives having the D painted out during the autumn. However, Derby Works would send all repainted locos out with no D, 111 and 134 being the first to appear as such on 6th September.

1969

In 1969 the 45s continued to go through the refurbishment programme, as with D125 seen on 30/08, above, with only a handful not completed by the end of the year, thus all class 45s were running in BR Blue . The first BR blue 46s would arrive in Works for their Light Overhauls and would be sent out unpainted, thus keeping their D prefixes.

In traffic there would be little change to the daily destinations with the exception of The Waverley Route, sadly, closed early in the year. At the very end of the year D151 appeared at Laira for crew training into Cornwall, an indicator of things to come.

1970

The start of the new decade would see no class 45s running in green or Toton Blue livery, the final refurbished loco, 119, appearing on 5th February. Nine 44s(including D3, above) and Nineteen 46s were still running in green on 1st January. D13, seen above, would finally lose the nose-end doors in November.

The major traffic news was the appearance of D151 at Laira for crew training runs into Cornwall at the start of the year, followed closely by 76 arriving at Newton Abbot for similar purpose to Paignton. Thus, by the end of the year most cross country services would be dominated by big Sulzers(D149 is seen at Plymouth after arriving with 1V64, above). Alas, Summer 1970 would be the last stand of 16 wheelers reaching Southern metals on regular passenger services.

1971

At the start of 1971 eight 44s and ten 46s(plus one in Works for painting into BR Blue) were still running in green on 1st January.

1972

At the start of 1972 six 44s and four 46s(plus one in Works for painting into BR Blue) were still running in green on 1st January. D165 would be the last 46 turned out in BR Blue on 8th December, leaving just D3, D6 and D7 in green at the end of the year.

In November D51 would enter Derby Works for General Repair, followed in December by D96. During these Overhauls it was decided that fifty class 45s would be fitted with Electric Train Heating, and thus these two locos would be the first so converted.

1973

The big news in 1973 was the arrival of the first TOPS renumbering, 45 101 at the end of March. All overhauls to class 45, whether non-converts(45/0) or converts to Electric Train Heating class 45/1 from this date would see the loco renumbered, but in the meantime a class 44 and several class 46 were turned out still pre Tops, until September when 46 045 and 44 006 appeared. 44 006 was the final Peak to be turned out in blue, and thus the only of the 193 locos never to appear in blue with its Pre TOPS number.
