1981. Late in its working life, here is 45 053 at Newquay on 29/08/1981. Photographer Clive Smith takes up the tale " 45053 basks in the sun on the 09.50 Newquay - Newcastle on Saturday 29th August 1981. After a Friday covering peaks on various relief trains I had ended up at Wolverhampton on 45054, followed by 45123 from Brum to Cheltenham for a few hours in the Midland Hotel outside the station with Ken Williams and Kev McCarthy. I seem to remember this was a bastion of Flowers Original ale. One of the first overnights heading west was the Nottingham - Newquay at 00.01 scoring with 45046. I think this was booked a loco change at Newton Abbot for an engine off the depot there as the train was booked half an hour at the station. Fully expecting to bale out at 03 blip we were pleasantly surprised when 45053 was the chosen loco so pulled down the blinds of our compos, turned the lights off (or not if the bulbs had gone out the window somewhere near Gloucester) and continued with our zedzz prior to the thrash up Luxulyan bank on load 10, followed by the standard greasy fried breakfast at Cornwall's premier resort. 45053 worked the pictured train as far as Plymouth where 45007 took over. Halcyon days."

1975. 95 stands at Immingham TMD on 02/03/1975, just days before going into Derby Works, where it was initially to be converted to an ETH loco as 45 150. However, it was found to be not suitable, and became 45 054. The 45 054 which was already renumbered, the former 78, was converted instead.

Painted up for a special freight earlier in the month, in conjunction with the departure of the Armed Forces Task Force to liberate the Falkland Islands, 45 055 ROYAL CORPS OF TRANSPORT is seen light engine at Bristol Temple Meads on 28/08/1982. The loco is believed to have brought a Portsmouth bound train from Cardiff.
